I thought I was fine at communicating prior to the course but have found that the skills that I learnt invaluable. They’ve made the difference in a wide range of situations and I think have made the biggest improvement in my medical practice of any course.
Some examples are:
• I’ve noticed the difference in patient satisfaction through skills I learnt on the course.
• I’ve have been able to help people express longstanding concerns or problems.
• In conflict situations, I’ve been able to apply techniques to resolve a situation.
• I’m more effective in clinical practice- I look and listen for cues, and feel equipped to gather information before giving a patient-focused plan.
Contrary to my initial reservation…. it doesn’t take longer…. and I’ve not yet been left feeling out of my depth and surrounded by emotional turmoil. In fact, I’ve found it rewarding and fulfilling to use communication techniques to help patients and aid my practice. And it’s even useful in everyday life!
